Express Sheet Mask Review | Holika Holika Juicy Mask Sheet “Honey”

Express Sheet Mask Review | Holika Holika Juicy Mask Sheet "Honey"

This sheet mask is from Skin18 and I was super excited to try this because I’ve seen these “juicy” sheet masks by Holika Holika at top curated Korean beauty sites all over. From Peach and Lily to MemeBox, these always stood out so when I saw them on Skin18 for such a low price, I grabbed one and I’m sad I didn’t grab more. So here’s an express mask review featuring the 5 “W’s” and “How”!

Who: Holika Holika Nourishing Juicy Mask Sheet in the Honey formula

Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Alcohol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Peg-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Honey Extract, Allantoin, Disodium Edta, Fragrance, Milk Protein Extract, Cocos Nucifera (coconut) Fruit Extract, Citrus Limon (lemon) Fruit Extract

Where: for $1.95

Why: My skin needed a dose of nourishing moisture and honey is known for its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and deeply hydrating properties which I needed because I hadn’t sheet masked in almost a week before this session.

What: A super soaked cellulose fiber sheet mask. The essence this was in was abundant and smelled so good. Just like fake honey and I didn’t mind it at all. The essence was a slippery gel and I could tell it would be hydrating which is exactly what I needed for slacking off on my regimen.

When: Sheet masks are usually applied after skin is cleansed, toned and usually a serum of choice is applied then, apply sheet mask to seal in that serum goodness. This is exactly what I did. I unfolded the densely packed sheet mask and applied the cool product onto my face. The mask fit very will with the eye holes completely covering my lower lids and brows for depuffing action and a nice sized mouth hole. I laid down and let it do it magic for about 40 minutes until I felt the mask sort of dry out.

How (did it do): I love sheet masks because they usually deliver immediate results and Holika Holika didn’t disappoint. Face was dewy, plump and radiant. Of course it was bright because of the reflective properties my now hydrated skin now posses. I was a happy customer.

Final Words: I really LOVE the ingredients of this mask. In K-beauty, ingredients doesn’t as much as performance but in the West, we’re sticklers about components so, the fact that it doesn’t contain parabens is great. It does have alcohol up high but I didn’t experience any drying but still giving that the side-eye. All in all, I’m going to collect all the Holika Holika Juicy Sheet Masks because of performance, quality, ingredients and price.

Giving it an A!

Highly recommend and check out the massive selection of sheet masks at Skin18.

This SPF Lotion Gives Me Glow, Moisture and Sun Protection Like No Ones Business

Hey my skin fiend fanatics!

I have a product I just have to rave about because it is just so awesome. Since I decided to up the skin care ante this year, I’ve been playing with chemical exfoliants, acids, and vitamin C, all of which are light/photo sensitive. This means they react to sunlight for the worse and that meant I had to get some sun protection factor going for the sake of avoiding sunspots, hyper pigmentation and discoloration. Problem was, I couldn’t stand the thought of sunscreen. Its a chemical factory laden with titanium dioxides and zinc…ugh! I’m a purist of sorts so I care not to regularly rub poison into my skin.

One fateful day, I’m in the pediatricians office scanning a parents magazine and I come across a sample: Garnier SkinActive Clearly Brighter SPF 15 Moisturizer. I popped it out and used it for the following two days worth of usage after my morning regimen and OMG, what a wonderful moisturizing sunscreen!

This SPF Lotion Gives Me Glow, Moisture and Sun Protection Like No Ones Business

Immediately, I went to my nearest local drugstore and bought the full size and haven’t looked back.

  • Silky smooth texture. Almost silicone-ish feel that goes on so smoothly on the skin and leaves a non shiny, non-greasy finish.
  • Very moisturizing leaving skin supple, moist and dewy looking
  • SPF of 15 which is not too low and not unnecessarily high. As a woman of color, I wanted just a bit of protection while still getting my vitamin D.
  • No titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. I’m not keen on these ingredients as they have chemical properties I’m not interested in permeating my skin. The lack of these components also prevents that white cast SPF usually causes.
  • It leaves such a wonderful bright, dewy glow. The vitamin C is definitely poppin’ in this formula and I can easily forgo highlighter or a luminizer.
  • Great packaging that allows me to one-twist lock the pump for super easy travel
  • It’s easily accessible. Garnier is a big store staple. I picked mine up from my local Duane Reade.

  • It was pretty pricey for a drugstore product with my drugstore ROBBING me by charging $19.89. I’m pretty sure ANYWHERE other than Duane Reade has it for a lower price. Also, Garnier has a $2 off coupon available to save some coins!
  • It’s so small! It’s 2.5 ounces and with daily use, that means it’ll go fast.

Will I repurchase?

Lets just say, this is a Holy Grail staple product especially with warm weather coming.

Super Sheet Mask Haul From Skin18

Super Sheet Mask Haul From Skin18

So I hauled a sh!t ton of sheet masks because I have an addictive personality and when I start researching it leads to discoveries and discoveries lead to usage and that turns to love and then to addiction and over buying leading ultimately to brokeness and living without a home but tons of skincare products so I can have beautiful skin for a homeless person.

With all that said, I made a super sheet mask haul from a site I came across one restless night, however, I do not have to worry about the homeless part because these sheet masks are super inexpensive! I mean starting at 85 cents cheap.

Skin18 is an online retailer selling tons of K-beauty brands (which I’m in lust with) at really affordable prices. It’s a great chance to stock up, try out and re up on skincare goodies which is exactly what I did. Skin18 is also awesome in that they include a ton of free sheet masks with a minimum purchase or, you could even just order their freebies and just pay shipping and handling! Not many places give you that luxury.

Onto the haul, I got an eye cream and 22 sheet masks all for $40. Score! First, all the sheet masks I purchased.

I’ll be reviewing all these sheet masks individually in the near future so be on the lookout for what sheet masks are rocking my world. Looking forward to another purchase from Skin18 soon too.

First Foray Into Sheet Masks | Innisfree Real Squeeze Sheet Masks

innisfree real squeeze sheet mask review

If you recall from this post, I’m making 2016 the year of the skin. All focus, attention and dollars (sideye) will be spent on achieving skin smooth in texture, non visible pores and complexion as smooth and bright as possible.

Since January, I’ve started the Korean 10 step skin care regimen (more on that in a future post) and one of those steps are the illustrious yet humble sheet mask. A long time staple in Asian skincare but a whole new product to me and I. Am. Obsessed. Sheet masks come in various materials such as the popular cotton, silk and hydrogel and run the gamut in assorted formulas for tasks such as brightening, pore refining, hydration, soothing…I could go on and on. The amazing thing about sheet masks is they deliver instant results. Peel it off after 20-however long and discover plump, bright and illuminated skin. Perfect before big events, a hot date or, if one’s bold enough, on the plane where skin gets dry in a hot minute. Prices on these goodies range from a dollar to infinity and beyond!

innisfree sheet mask review

I’ve dipped my toe into the lazy girl’s facial with the Asian brand, Innisfree and ordered a 15 count variety pack of their Real Squeeze sheet masks. They are pretty basic when it comes to sheet masks but with their ingredients they do deliver a hydrating punch and super soft skin.

I’m not going to review ALL of them but here’s a run down of a few:

innisfree rice sheet mask review

The rice (moisturizing) “flavor” is a popular choice as it’s one of their brightening formulas. It has a milky essence absorbed into a thick cotton sheet as opposed to the more common watery essence with a mild neutral scent. The sheet fit great, coming all the way up under my eye for depuffing and hydrating capabilities. It left my skin supple and plump immediately but a bit sticky when I pulled it off and super bright in the morning.

innisfree strawberry sheet mask review

Strawberry (brightening) had watery essence accompanied by a thinner sheet and boy, did it smell sweet and fruity like it’s namesake. Oddly, this was cooling on my skin and as I was wearing, I experienced mild burning/irritation but when I peeled off, skin looked fine. Less sticky then rice mask. Delivered immediate hydration but no visible brightening in the morning.

Strawberry Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Niacinamide, Ethanol, Betaine, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Strawberry Juice (200mg), Xanthan Gum, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tangerine Peel Extract, Orchid Extract, The green Tea Extract, Camellia Leaf Extract, Prickly Pear Extract, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance

innisfree blackberry sheet mask review

Blackberry (total care) was a fave of mine. It had a silky, milky, non sticky essence. It brightened and plumped my skin so beautifully. It smelled fruity and had a thick cotton mask. Saw nourished and soothing results immediately after and the next morning.

Blackberry Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Butylene Glycol, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Blackberry Juice(200mg), Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Glyceryl Stearate, Dimethicone, PEG-100 Stearate, Carbomer, Xanthan Gum, Ethylhexylglycerin, Potassium Hydroxide, Adenosine, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tangerine Peel Extract, Orchid Extract, The green Tea Extract, Camellia Leaf Extract, Prickly Pear Extract, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance

 innisfree real squeeze sheet masks

Rose (firming) had a beautiful…rose scent. I loved it. Jam packed with a watery textured essence, it produced no stinging but mild soothing. As good as it smelled, it unfortunately yielded no immediate results other than wet skin.

Rose Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Ethanol, Betaine, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Rosa Centifolia Juice (200mg), Xanthan Gum, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tangerine Peel Extract, Orchid Extract, The green Tea Extract, Camellia Leaf Extract, Prickly Pear Extract, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance

Shea butter (nutri-moisturizing) had the mild smell of spa with a thick milky essence adhered to a thick cotton sheet (it looks like thick serum, thick sheet, thin serum, thin sheet). Not a stand out but definitely hydrating and gave soft skin.

Shea Butter Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Glyceryl Stearate, Dimethicone, PEG-100 Stearate, Carbomer, Shea Butter(20mg), Xanthan Gum, Ethylhexylglycerin, Potassium Hydroxide, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Sodium Hyaluronate, Prickly Pear Extract, Camellia Leaf Extract, The green Tea Extract, Orchid Extract, Tangerine Peel Extract, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance

innisfree kiwi sheet mask review

One of my total faves was the kiwi sheet mask. It had such a nice fruity scent to complement its kiwi (nutri-moisturizing) name with a nice milky essence and thick cotton material. For some reason, the essence was so silky to me! After my 30 minutes were up, I peeled it off and continued to pat the remaining essence into my skin and OMG, it was just so smooth and silky. I wrung the remaining serum out and proceeded to slap it all over my body and it just glided and moisturized the hell out of my legs. They next morning, my face was deliciously smooth and bright.

Kiwi Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Kiwi Juice(200mg), Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Glyceryl Stearate, Dimethicone, PEG-100 Stearate, Carbomer, Xanthan Gum, Ethylhexylglycerin, Potassium Hydroxide, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tangerine Peel Extract, Orchid Extract, The green Tea Extract, Camellia Leaf Extract, Prickly Pear Extract, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance

innisfree real squeeze sheet mask review

This before and after is 45 minutes laying around watching The Walking Dead while masking in the bija “flavor” sheet mask and you can see that it definitely hydrated, brightened and smoothed my face.

innisfree real squeeze sheet masks

And this photo is the morning after and I maintained some of the brightening aspects. Yay!

Would I repurchase, hmmmm……

Since they are my first set of sheet masks in life…

Probably not. They are great starter masks though. Perfect for those looking to try them out and get basic results. Innisfree Real Squeeze Sheet Masks have good ingredients and deliver immediate results. I’d definitely USE them again if I got them free but now that my mask cherry is popped, it’s a whole new sheet mask world.

I give the Innisfree Real Squeeze Sheet Masks 3 out of 5 stars.

I got 15 masks for about $15-$16 which is a great deal on Amazon.

Have you tried sheet masks and if not, will you? Which sheet masks are your faves?

Stay Glowy!

5 Bad Habits Sabotaging Your Skin

5 bad habits sabotaging your skin

I’m pretty sure we take great efforts in taking care of our skin. That’s probably why you’re reading this right now. But do you find your skin freaking out despite intense cleansing, thorough exfoliation and rigorous toning with your finest astringent? So frustrating, I know.

It probably wouldn’t occur to you that you’re inadvertently effing up your skin. Shame on you! I kid, but it helps to know you may be doing one of these 5 no-nos and sabotaging your best skin efforts. Take a look.

1. You touch your face–all the time.

My face looks like a wrecking ball...

My face looks like a wrecking ball…

It’s so easy to pass bacteria, the number one breakout inducer, to your face through your hands. Every palm rest, every touch to see how soft your skin is, even scratching of the nose. Think, just think of all the things you touch: door knobs, subway poles, elevator buttons, bathroom light switches. They all just made their way to your face. Even hand washing doesn’t eliminate ALL traces of those gross germs because they can especially linger under the nails. It’s a real hard habit to break, touching the face, because we don’t even realize its being done most times but if you’re prone to acne, breakouts and just angry skin in general, it would be wise to take note and make a conscious effort to quit it.

2. When was the last time you changed your pillowcase?

change your pillowcase

If it was more than a week, its waaaaaaay too long. Pillowcases are grease residue harborers(fake word) especially when you go through your lovely night time skin routine, slather your skin in that fancy luscious cream then hit the pillow. Chances are, some of that cream hadn’t absorbed fully and has now transferred to your nightly head rest. So, do yourself a favor and have a couple pillows in rotation a week. If not, then one week MAX.

Bonus points: Sleep on silk/satin pillows! They prevent face creasing (those annoying lines in your face created by cotton pillows), retain moisture in skin and hair (cotton leeches moisture) and just feels luxurious and cooling.

3. You Don’t Wash Your Makeup Brushes

wash your makeup brushes

Not only does dirty brushes ruin the pigmentation and outcome of your makeup but it gives you a healthy dose of leftover dirt, grime, oil, dead skin cells and old breakout bacteria. All in all, dirty makeup brushes directly leads to acne breakouts giving you a lose/lose situation in the battle of the skin. Now, the washing schedule of your brushes depends on how often you apply. If you apply makeup daily, I say once a week, 2 MAX but that’s just me. Do not, DO NOT go beyond a month for washing your brushes. Even if you aren’t wearing makeup, its collecting dust and dust=dead skin cells. Eww.

Tip: Zote Laundry Soap, a huge block of Mexican washing soap is phenomenal at washing makeup brushes and blending sponges with the swiftness of Speedy Gonzalez. Slices grease and foundation like magic.

4. Not Wiping Your Phone.

5 bad habits sabotaging your skin

According to this article, a cell phone has 18 times more bacteria than a public bathroom. Why? Because a bathroom gets cleaned regularly in the strongest of bleaches and ammonias. Phones, not so much. Then all those germs, makeup, bacteria and even fecal matter that’s smeared on your phone gets and front seat ride right to your face. Whatever your hand touches, your phone touches is the primary rule, the only difference is your hand can be doused in soap and water often while your phone cannot. Here’s whatcha do: As soon as you come in from work, school, outdoor adventures, etc., clean your phone with either a disinfectant cloth or a cotton pad doused in rubbing alcohol. Attack that screen which touches your face and wipe for a clean slate then focus on all the crevices of your phone. Even remove the case. Do this daily. Clean phone, clean face.

5. Your Love of Cheese, Milk, Yogurt, Ice Cream…

dairy causes acne

There are multiple studies in the correlation between acne and dairy. Just type it in and you’ll see the dozens and dozens…and dozens of articles that show the effects of cow secretions on breakouts and people who have saved their skin by eliminating that devilish ingredient.

Milk causes acne because

  • There is abundance of a hormone called IGF-1 in milk, which is really good for baby cows, but not for you. IGF-1 is a growth hormone. It makes baby cows grow up big and strong, but in humans, it tends to make your acne grow big instead. IGF-1 is one of several factors that cause inflammation in humans, and which eventually lead to acne (and the ugly redness and swelling that makes acne so annoying).
  • Milk and dairy products cause an insulin spike in humans that cause the liver to produce even more IGF-1, leading to even more acne.
  • Dairy causes your skin to produce excess sebum (oil), leading to – you guessed it! – more clogged pores, more acne, and a breeding ground for P. acnes bacteria, which feed on your sebum and spew out inflammatory by-products.
  • Dairy glues together dead skin cells inside your pores, so they can’t exit naturally, leading to clogged pores (and thus more acne).

Even WebMD claims its one of the worst foods for complexion and this young lady found skin salvation in removing dairy from her diet to cure her cystic acne after years of dermatology, prescription topical drugs and headache. She couldn’t believe how simple the answer was.

Upping My Skin Care Regimen for 2016

The queen of perfect skin--Megan Good

The queen of perfect skin–Megan Good

I’m 26 years of age currently. That’s not old, right? Well as I near closer to 30, I’ve been entranced by a new obsession–skin care (my obsessions comes in waves).

Knowing “black don’t crack” just isn’t cutting it for me and since I’m also making a resolution to practice simpler makeup techniques, glowing, plump, smooth and flawless skin is a must. I want to have that lit from within look. That “wow, what do you do?” skin. That, eternally youthful look and my goal to do whatever I can to attain it.

Now, I have really good skin. It’s relatively clear, the texture is pretty good, its soft and my complexion is overall clear. But always, there’s room for improvement. Here’s what I want or would like to improve:

  • Skin evenness. I have a bit of hyper pigmentation around my mouth area and a dark spot here or there from old blemishes
  • Texture. My skin needs some smoothing. Sloughing off dead skin is necessary
  • Dryness. I have combination skin so I have a super oily T-zone (forehead & nose) and dry face perimeter. This winter is really kicking my skins ass
  • Pores. I can see them! They need some clearing, vacuuming, suctioning…etc.
  • Clarity. I want really bright and dewy skin. My skin is looking pretty dull nowadays and getting a lack of sleep isn’t helping (thanks Avery)

So I’ve been going HAM on Sephora’s website filling my basket with products I’m coveting for clear, beautiful glowing skin and I’m just waiting for my big paycheck to grab a few skin care regimen essential basics to really start and more importantly STICK to a solid skin care regimen.

First off, cleanser. What I’m looking for is a product to thoroughly clear out dirt, makeup and oil without stripping my skin. I think I found it in the Philosophy Purity Made Simple Cleanser. With over 9000 reviews and an average of 4.5 stars, it’s worth a purchase.  Upping My Skin Care Regimen for 2016

Next up is an exfoliator to remove dead skin and improve skin texture and tone. I’ve sung the praises of daily exfoliation in a past post but you don’t hear me though! Exfoliating (and often) is a game changer. Out of all the goodies I’ve seen on Sephora, a few stood out. I’ve been plotting and scheming on this Skin Inc. Revival Peel which is a “revolutionary non-abrasive peel that visibly but gently removes dullness and dead skin cells. It preps skin to maximize absorption of nutrients from your daily skincare products and acts like a dynamic primer to create the perfect canvas for your makeup.” Swoon. They have a bundle set which includes the brands serum and mask, all of which I’m dying to try. It’s pricey coming in at ninety bucks but I. Do. Not. Care. Great Skin comes at a price.

Upping My Skin Care Regimen for 2016

I also want a mechanical exfoliator. You know, the one with the little shells or beads and the Ole Henriksen Walnut Complexion Scrub stood out as a customer favorite with practically 5 stars.

Upping My Skin Care Regimen for 2016

A mask is a necessary luxury. You use them to fine tune your skin depending on need. Whether it be moisture, pore cleansing, brightening, smoothing. I love my homemade mask of Aztec Healing Bentonite Clay. It deep cleanses further than your daily cleanser and resets skin but I saw the Origins Clear Improvement Charcoal Mask, I wanted it like…yesterday. It claims to clear debris from pores and dissolve impurities thus, shrinking pores for a flawless canvas. Charcoal is trending right now in beauty so keep an eye out!

Upping My Skin Care Regimen for 2016

I’m lusting after that Skin Inc. serum included in that bundle but even further, on the Skin Inc. website, they have a skin quiz where they personalize a custom serum for your skin needs! Dying! I cannot wait. Serum is just concentrated goodness delivered to your skin to literally drink and slurp up and benefit from all those nutrients.

I have my eyes on a few moisturizers but a couple stand out: belif The True Cream Moisturizing Bomb which floods the skin with moisture for plump dewiness which is so needed for my skin. It feels so tight and dry lately. And then, there’s the Josie Maran Whipped Argan Oil Face Butter which, oh my word, is so luxurious and nourishing but a whopping $40 for 1.7 oz. Ouch but I can imagine the delivery of goodness that’ll deliver. Le sigh.

Upping My Skin Care Regimen for 2016

I’m still on the look out for a good dark spot treatment for old blemishes.

Right now, I’m going to knock one of those items off my lust list by copping the Philosophy Cleanser but its a set which includes the famous cleanser, the brands microdelivery peel that “rapidly resurfaces the skin as it replenishes it with vitamin C. The Microdermabrasion Peel gives a complete skin makeover in just three minutes. This revolutionary dual phase treatment rapidly replenishes with skin-brightening vitamin c and skin-firming peptides to help smooth rough texture, even skin tone and minimize the appearance of fine lines.” Then topping it off with their Hope in a Jar moisturizer. Getting this baby at Macy’s.

And most importantly, I’ve been drinking water like a fish! Water is the end all be all when it comes to healthy skin, healthy body healthy hair and is the foundation to youthfulness. Most people do not drink enough water and it’s not easy to fill your recommended quota but if changing your inside and outside is your goal, it should be your job. I drink 3 liters a day. About a gallon of water roughly–give or take. A good rule of thumb for water intake for any individual would be take your weight, cut it in half, and viola, your ounces. Challenge yourself. Its an awesome feeling to know that you’re truly hydrated. Organs work smoothly, body smells fresher and, of course, the skin from head to toe with just become as plump as a baby’s.

Wish me the best on my skin care ventures! I’ll keep you updated.

Update: I ended up purchasing the Philosophy Cleanser and the Ole Henriksen Walnut Scrub from Sephora. I don’t know why I almost strayed from my lust list.
