One Meal At A Time | The Secret to Successfully Approaching a Diet

When most think of losing weight or a diet, it’s seen as an arduous task. Even more vexing, when one has a large amount of weight to lose and think of how much time it’ll take to reach your goal.

While listening to my daily self-help, entrepreneurial and goal achieving audiobooks, I heard a gem. Its not a gem I haven’t heard before but I thought of it in another way:

Do something everyday, even if it’s a little step, towards attaining your goal.

Its pretty straightforward. Do something. Everyday.

Then I thought of my weight loss goal and my continuos struggle to maintain motivation. Its hard when you think of 50 pounds later, or eating clean for an entire week much less a month. Its not quite easy to see the larger picture but what if we focused smaller. Beyond eating well for the week. Let go closer than a even say, a day. Lets focus on hour by hour. Aha! Make a wise choice every single hour.

Like for breakfast this morning, I had the option of cereal with cows milk (not bad but Im staying away from animal secretions), a bag of Chex mix (empty carb central) and then I spotted a nice bowl of instant oatmeal and nuts. The best option of all. Paired with a mega mug of green tea, I made a wise choice to set me up for better choices throughout the day, leading to better choices throughout the week leading me closer to my weight loss goals!

Take it one meal at a time instead of overwhelmingly wondering how you’ll achieve your weight loss goals and you’ll wonder when the weight fell off miraculously without feeling deprived or unmotivated. Each meal/hour should be your best choice supplemented by healthy drink options as well. Every hour, have an 8 ounce glass of water. You’ll be shocked by the end of the day, how much more water you’ll have consumed and reap the benefits of not even being as hungry as you thought you were. Most times hunger cues are really just thirst in disguise.

So, with this new realization in use, I look forward to keeping you all informed with my continuing weight loss goals. So far, since August 2015, I’ve lost a humble 28 pounds making me 214 currently. My first goal is to get back under 200 lbs. I’m sure I’ll get there. One meal at a time.

Ok, let me stop the games.

So, the “New Year, New You” stuff rolls around for 2016 and I vowed to really take losing my baby weight seriously because only for so long can you say “it’s baby weight”. It was resolution time and a fresh start for the struggle I’ve found in starting weight loss. From holiday eating and just plain laziness, I found myself 229 pounds at the beginning of the month of January 2016 originally weighing 242 at the end of my pregnancy. Um, that sucks. I’m lucky that I’m 5’9″ and pretty proportional but, I felt so heavy and not “me”.  So, it was time to overhaul. Here’s what I did.


Funny story: in mid December, I was skipping through cable channels and came across an infomercial of people doing a dance workout. I rolled my eyes because Zumba and I aren’t friends. I have poor coordination and dancing was just corny to me but as I watched further, I saw it was my bestie in my head, Shaun T! Creator of Insanity, T25 and the infamous Hip Hop Abs had created a new dance workout titled Cize. By the end of the infomercial, I was on the website with card in hand. Really Quickly before I pressed “Place Order”, I looked up some Amazon reviews. They were hit and miss and I kinda backed out of the purchase.

Would you believe 10 minutes later, I received an email saying “Thank you for your order”!? I was in disbelief for half a minute then took it as a sign. Do Cize and see what happens.


January first, I took my weight (229), measurements (see below) and popped in the first of 6 dance routines. It was fun! I enjoyed doing it. I actually completed 6 days in a row and had to ask my boyfriend if I should take a rest because I was fine doing 7 days. I danced and sweat and learned routines to hot songs like “Lose my Breath” by Destiny’s Child, “Pass That Dutch” by Missy Elliot and “Chandelier”by Sia. By the time I looked at the calendar, it was the end of 30 days my weigh in said 219. Ten pounds gone.


Diet is 80% of weight loss so this step is EVERYTHING. I started meal prepping. Yes. I proportioned out a set amount of food for lunch and dinner which lasted for about 4 days until I made food again to last for the remainder of the week and did that for the entire month. Why did this work?

  1. My food was portion controlled. I measured out my protein, carbs and just filled up the rest of my container with veggies. This always leads to good things when you have a handle on HOW MUCH one’s eating.
  2. I didn’t have to worry about WHAT to eat. Bad decisions are usually made in hunger and if I took the “what do I eat?” part out of the equation, it’s less likely that I’d veer off course. I had no excuse because all my portioned meals were ready for me.

I also went back to my whole food plant based meal plan. Basically, I cut out meat and dairy. I consumed 3 liters of water a day and I had apples for snacks. Ta. Da. For breakfast, I have a green smoothie and/or a cup of oatmeal.

I bought about twenty 24 ounce containers from my local “dollar” store. Love em.

Ten pounds and 5.25 inches ain’t too bad at all. Ready for another ten. Goal is under 200 by end of March and ultimate goal is 160-170. I’ll see.

Green Pregnancy Smoothie | Pineapple Banana Yum Yum

Green smoothies provide a good source of folate, calcium, iron and other vitamins and minerals needed for healthy fetal development, they also make a convenient and healthy snack or meal and if done right, be totally delicious.

Heres my Pineapple Banana Yum Yum

1 c. organic romaine lettuce
1 c. organic baby spinach
1.5 c. coconut water
2-3 frozen bananas
1 c. golden rip pineapples
2 tbsp. ground flax seeds

Blend 45-60 seconds and enjoy!

This fills up my 32 oz. size ninja blender cup.

Its no secret that Kerry Washington is one of the most beautiful women to grace our screens but I had to wonder, ‘What’s her secret?’ Well, as it turns out, most of her beauty comes from within meaning she feeds herself whole foods and lots of juices and smoothies.

Why are green smoothies so amazing?

  • Obviously, you increase your daily consumption of fruits and veggies and because its blended and processed into micro nutrients, benefits are delivered to the bloodstream quicker while the fiber remaining (unlike juice) helps keep you full and regular.
  • Clearer skin because you’re now expelling all those toxins through having that fiber that keeps the colon clear.
  • You naturally lose weight because its fruits and vegetables! How can you be doing your body a disservice with those ingredients?
  • You naturally get more water because fruits and vegetables are packed with water. Upping you water intake helps clear out toxins, plump and brighten skin and gives you that Kerry glow.

I was feeling a bit sluggish and low on rich whole food nutrients so I hunted down a green smoothie recipe.

I didn’t have to search long for one of Kerry Washington’s favorite smoothies, especially while she was pregnant:

The Glowing Green Smoothie

1 head romaine lettuce, chopped
3-4 stalks celery, chopped
½ head of a large bunch or ¾ of a small bunch of spinach
1 apple, cored and chopped
1 pear, cored and chopped
1 banana, sliced
Juice of ½ fresh lemon
⅓ bunch cilantro, optional
⅓ bunch parsley, optional

I made a few tweaks:

  • I didn’t add the optional herbs
  • I added ginger
  • I added coconut water (I absolutely love the sweet zing it adds)
  • Only half of the pear and apple because I dont have that much room in my blender
  • Ice. Lots of ice.

Blended it all up in my 32oz Nutri Ninja and I felt so good downing all that goodness. I was really missing my smoothies. Now that the weather is warming up, looking forward to having them with all kind of good local farmer’s market fruit.

Count your blessings

  1. I am truly blessed to have grown up in Queens because it is such a quiet and peaceful, suburban area to grow up playing until the lights came on and playing with the kids and riding my bike and playing in grass or climbing trees. I’m so grateful I got to grow up in the suburbs of beautiful Queens.
  1. I am so happy and grateful for Courtney’s chef skills because he does an excellent job making wonderful, gourmet foods for us to enjoy at home and he executes it amazingly.
  1. I am truly grateful for the remote because of its convenience to change channels without getting up. Sometimes, I wont watch TV if I cant find the remote.
  1. With all my heart, thank you for deodorant because it keeps me fresh smelling and deters sweat.
  1. I am so thankful for my ex’s because every one of them has taught me so much about myself, love, and what I will and will not tolerate. Exs are the hardest yet most influential people you will ever have to make in your life but it is always good to grow from any lesson learned from them.
  1. Thank you so much for hats because they hide my hair in a pinch so I can look presentable or to spruce up an outfit.
  1. I am truly blessed for my backyard because it hosts family events, BBQs and a little garden which most New Yorkers do not have the benefit of owning.
  1. Thank you so much for Pipdig because they are the makers of my beautifully simple website which is great and fun to use.
  1. I am so grateful for fast food restaurants because I love an occasional treat from fries to a taco. We’ve all enjoyed the salty greasy goodness of a fast food joint.
  1. With all my heart, thank you for my upcoming trip to Canada because traveling is a wonderful opportunity to explore, learn and I also get to see my cousin get married.

A thankful heart hath a continual feast.

We all know the tradition of blessing or thanking food before its consumed, but in this day and age, the custom is being lost in this new generation (I’m guilty as well) and its time to be thankful for our nourishment once again.

Food is a gift! Think about how upset, weak, dizzy or confused you get when you’re hungry. When you finally eat, its like the heavens opened up, your energy is boundless and you love your friends again. Food is powerful. Say thank you for it.

Today, before you eat or drink ANYTHING, take a moment to look at what you’re about to eat or drink and say the magic words, thank you!

Be grateful for the simple things in life and saying thank you is the best way to multiply those simple pleasures.

When you can feel that degree of gratitude, magic will happen.
