Two Products I Used To Lay My Unruly Edges

imageI have super coarse edges. Disrespectfully crunchy, unruly and the hardest to lay flat and smooth.

Now, I understand that I have kinky coily type 4b hair and having baby hair like Chili from TLC is just not going to happen. I get it. But a style is just that much more put together when the edges are laid. My humble opinion and my edges fight me tooth and nail. You’d think I’d just give up the struggle and let them sway all willy nilly but no. I came up with a combo that smoothed, laid, tamed and even, dare I say “swooped” my baby hurrs immaculately without a beady bead or flyaway in sight.

My beloved Blue Magic Castor Oil Grease and Argan Oil Ecostyler Gel.

Can I get an AMEN?

Now, the star of the show is not the gel but the grease that lays beneath. I’ve posted multiple YouTube videos about my love affair with grease and it has just continued to prove to me why its the G.O.A.T. and now, I can rock my signature middle part low bun like a boss because all day, not a strand disrespected me.

Here’s what I did:

  1. On dry combed out hair, I made my center part and slathered a generous helping of my favorite leave in, Giovanni Direct, all over.
  2. While still damp, I took a nice quarter size amount of that good old grease on each side focusing of my edges, then took my Denman brush and smoothed my hair into a low ponytail. Love the Denman brush because it reaches my scalp through all that thick hair to smooth thoroughly.
  3. Grabbed a nice dollop of gel and smoothed on top. Taking my soft boar bristle brush, I smoothed all my hair back. At this point, my waves were on swim.
  4. Took my baby hair brush (a toothbrush. Don’t judge) and laid edges to perfection.
  5. Grabbed a scarf and set the style for about 20 minutes while I got dressed.

image

When I took my scarf off, it was beautiful as most scarf helped styles are BUT not only was it neat, it was soft, shiny and no gel cast! My hair felt like hair but was smooth. And my edges…I genuinely have to say I was so proud of them. I wore my sleek bun for over 9 hours and not a nap dared to kink up. Delightful!

This is my new power combo for smooth edges. What do you use to smooth yours?

I’ve been seeing makeup greats such as SonjdraDeluxe and MsRoshPosh pull this look off beautifully and I’m here for it!

This look relies heavily on great skin care. Taking care of my skin is important to me so I can wear these looks. It’s also moisturizer heavy so be careful if  you’re oily.

First Foray Into Sheet Masks | Innisfree Real Squeeze Sheet Masks

innisfree real squeeze sheet mask review

If you recall from this post, I’m making 2016 the year of the skin. All focus, attention and dollars (sideye) will be spent on achieving skin smooth in texture, non visible pores and complexion as smooth and bright as possible.

Since January, I’ve started the Korean 10 step skin care regimen (more on that in a future post) and one of those steps are the illustrious yet humble sheet mask. A long time staple in Asian skincare but a whole new product to me and I. Am. Obsessed. Sheet masks come in various materials such as the popular cotton, silk and hydrogel and run the gamut in assorted formulas for tasks such as brightening, pore refining, hydration, soothing…I could go on and on. The amazing thing about sheet masks is they deliver instant results. Peel it off after 20-however long and discover plump, bright and illuminated skin. Perfect before big events, a hot date or, if one’s bold enough, on the plane where skin gets dry in a hot minute. Prices on these goodies range from a dollar to infinity and beyond!

innisfree sheet mask review

I’ve dipped my toe into the lazy girl’s facial with the Asian brand, Innisfree and ordered a 15 count variety pack of their Real Squeeze sheet masks. They are pretty basic when it comes to sheet masks but with their ingredients they do deliver a hydrating punch and super soft skin.

I’m not going to review ALL of them but here’s a run down of a few:

innisfree rice sheet mask review

The rice (moisturizing) “flavor” is a popular choice as it’s one of their brightening formulas. It has a milky essence absorbed into a thick cotton sheet as opposed to the more common watery essence with a mild neutral scent. The sheet fit great, coming all the way up under my eye for depuffing and hydrating capabilities. It left my skin supple and plump immediately but a bit sticky when I pulled it off and super bright in the morning.

Rice Ingredients: WATER, GLYCERIN, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, CETYL ETHYLHEXANOATE, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, CITRUS PARADISI (GRAPEFRUIT) FRUIT EXTRACT, ORYZA SATIVA (RICE) EXTRACT, POLYGLYCERYL-3 METHYLGLUCOSE DISTEARATE, GLYCERYL STEARATE, DIMETHICONE, PEG-100 STEARATE, CARBOMER, XANTHAN GUM, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE, ALOE BARBADENSIS LEAF JUICE, SODIUM HYALURONATE, CITRUS UNSHIU PEEL EXTRACT, ORCHID EXTRACT, CAMELLIA SINENSIS LEAF EXTRACT, CAMELLIA JAPONICA LEAF EXTRACT, OPUNTIA COCCINELLIFERA FRUIT EXTRACT, DISODIUM EDTA, PHENOXYETHANOL, FRAGRANCE

innisfree strawberry sheet mask review

Strawberry (brightening) had watery essence accompanied by a thinner sheet and boy, did it smell sweet and fruity like it’s namesake. Oddly, this was cooling on my skin and as I was wearing, I experienced mild burning/irritation but when I peeled off, skin looked fine. Less sticky then rice mask. Delivered immediate hydration but no visible brightening in the morning.

Strawberry Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Niacinamide, Ethanol, Betaine, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Strawberry Juice (200mg), Xanthan Gum, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tangerine Peel Extract, Orchid Extract, The green Tea Extract, Camellia Leaf Extract, Prickly Pear Extract, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance

innisfree blackberry sheet mask review

Blackberry (total care) was a fave of mine. It had a silky, milky, non sticky essence. It brightened and plumped my skin so beautifully. It smelled fruity and had a thick cotton mask. Saw nourished and soothing results immediately after and the next morning.

Blackberry Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Butylene Glycol, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Blackberry Juice(200mg), Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Glyceryl Stearate, Dimethicone, PEG-100 Stearate, Carbomer, Xanthan Gum, Ethylhexylglycerin, Potassium Hydroxide, Adenosine, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tangerine Peel Extract, Orchid Extract, The green Tea Extract, Camellia Leaf Extract, Prickly Pear Extract, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance

 innisfree real squeeze sheet masks

Rose (firming) had a beautiful…rose scent. I loved it. Jam packed with a watery textured essence, it produced no stinging but mild soothing. As good as it smelled, it unfortunately yielded no immediate results other than wet skin.

Rose Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Ethanol, Betaine, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Rosa Centifolia Juice (200mg), Xanthan Gum, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tangerine Peel Extract, Orchid Extract, The green Tea Extract, Camellia Leaf Extract, Prickly Pear Extract, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance

Shea butter (nutri-moisturizing) had the mild smell of spa with a thick milky essence adhered to a thick cotton sheet (it looks like thick serum, thick sheet, thin serum, thin sheet). Not a stand out but definitely hydrating and gave soft skin.

Shea Butter Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Glyceryl Stearate, Dimethicone, PEG-100 Stearate, Carbomer, Shea Butter(20mg), Xanthan Gum, Ethylhexylglycerin, Potassium Hydroxide, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Sodium Hyaluronate, Prickly Pear Extract, Camellia Leaf Extract, The green Tea Extract, Orchid Extract, Tangerine Peel Extract, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance

innisfree kiwi sheet mask review

One of my total faves was the kiwi sheet mask. It had such a nice fruity scent to complement its kiwi (nutri-moisturizing) name with a nice milky essence and thick cotton material. For some reason, the essence was so silky to me! After my 30 minutes were up, I peeled it off and continued to pat the remaining essence into my skin and OMG, it was just so smooth and silky. I wrung the remaining serum out and proceeded to slap it all over my body and it just glided and moisturized the hell out of my legs. They next morning, my face was deliciously smooth and bright.

Kiwi Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Kiwi Juice(200mg), Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Glyceryl Stearate, Dimethicone, PEG-100 Stearate, Carbomer, Xanthan Gum, Ethylhexylglycerin, Potassium Hydroxide, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tangerine Peel Extract, Orchid Extract, The green Tea Extract, Camellia Leaf Extract, Prickly Pear Extract, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance

innisfree real squeeze sheet mask review

This before and after is 45 minutes laying around watching The Walking Dead while masking in the bija “flavor” sheet mask and you can see that it definitely hydrated, brightened and smoothed my face.

And this photo is the morning after and I maintained some of the brightening aspects. Yay!

Would I repurchase, hmmmm……

Since they are my first set of sheet masks in life…

Probably not. They are great starter masks though. Perfect for those looking to try them out and get basic results. Innisfree Real Squeeze Sheet Masks have good ingredients and deliver immediate results. I’d definitely USE them again if I got them free but now that my mask cherry is popped, it’s a whole new sheet mask world.

I give the Innisfree Real Squeeze Sheet Masks 3 out of 5 stars.

I got 15 masks for about $15-$16 which is a great deal on Amazon.

Have you tried sheet masks and if not, will you? Which sheet masks are your faves?

Stay Glowy!

How I Lost 10 Pounds in 4 Weeks!

how I lost 10 pounds in 4 weeks

Diet and exercise. The End.

Ha! Just kidding. Unicorn tears and Olympian strength training.

tumblr_mryg0bAlKI1rit6tdo2_500

Ok, let me stop the games.

So, the “New Year, New You” stuff rolls around for 2016 and I vowed to really take losing my baby weight seriously because only for so long can you say “it’s baby weight”. It was resolution time and a fresh start for the struggle I’ve found in starting weight loss. From holiday eating and just plain laziness, I found myself 229 pounds at the beginning of the month of January 2016 originally weighing 242 at the end of my pregnancy. Um, that sucks. I’m lucky that I’m 5’9″ and pretty proportional but, I felt so heavy and not “me”.  So, it was time to overhaul. Here’s what I did.

Exercise

Funny story: in mid December, I was skipping through cable channels and came across an infomercial of people doing a dance workout. I rolled my eyes because Zumba and I aren’t friends. I have poor coordination and dancing was just corny to me but as I watched further, I saw it was my bestie in my head, Shaun T! Creator of Insanity, T25 and the infamous Hip Hop Abs had created a new dance workout titled Cize. By the end of the infomercial, I was on the website with card in hand. Really Quickly before I pressed “Place Order”, I looked up some Amazon reviews. They were hit and miss and I kinda backed out of the purchase.

Would you believe 10 minutes later, I received an email saying “Thank you for your order”!? I was in disbelief for half a minute then took it as a sign. Do Cize and see what happens.

January first, I took my weight (229), measurements (see below) and popped in the first of 6 dance routines. It was fun! I enjoyed doing it. I actually completed 6 days in a row and had to ask my boyfriend if I should take a rest because I was fine doing 7 days. I danced and sweat and learned routines to hot songs like “Lose my Breath” by Destiny’s Child, “Pass That Dutch” by Missy Elliot and “Chandelier”by Sia. By the time I looked at the calendar, it was the end of 30 days my weigh in said 219. Ten pounds gone.

Diet

Diet is 80% of weight loss so this step is EVERYTHING. I started meal prepping. Yes. I proportioned out a set amount of food for lunch and dinner which lasted for about 4 days until I made food again to last for the remainder of the week and did that for the entire month. Why did this work?

FullSizeRender copy

top: sweet potatoes and a veggie pattie cut up bottom: bean chili with brown rice shells

  1. My food was portion controlled. I measured out my protein, carbs and just filled up the rest of my container with veggies. This always leads to good things when you have a handle on HOW MUCH one’s eating.
  2. I didn’t have to worry about WHAT to eat. Bad decisions are usually made in hunger and if I took the “what do I eat?” part out of the equation, it’s less likely that I’d veer off course. I had no excuse because all my portioned meals were ready for me.

I also went back to my whole food plant based meal plan. Basically, I cut out meat and dairy. I consumed 3 liters of water a day and I had apples for snacks. Ta. Da. For breakfast, I have a green smoothie and/or a cup of oatmeal.

I bought about twenty 24 ounce containers from my local “dollar” store. Love em.

Here are the stats and a pic!

don't mind mind the letter lol!
